The couple in this painting are performing a ceremony celebrating their personal love and their love for the earth. Part of the ceremony includes honoring the four directions.
To the East we have a bird, bringer of Springtime, new beginnings and the air element. To the South is lizard, symbol of Summer, high noon, and the fire element. Turtle represents the West, place of introspection and feelings. Here is the Autumn season and the water element. The Earth element is represented by buffalo. The winter season and dark of night prepare the space for deep transition.
